Regional film distributor Empire Entertainment in collaboration with Mooz Films has announced the release of Nadine Labaki's Oscar-nominated film in theaters across the Middle East.
Capernaum, directed by Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki, will screen in theatres across the Middle East in UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Iraq and Syria on 14 March, while dates for Egypt, Kuwait and KSA will follow. Regional film distributor Empire Entertainment in collaboration with Mooz Films has announced the release of the Oscar-nominated film in theaters across the Middle East.
Capernaum (Chaos) depicts the excruciating journey of 12-year-old Zain through the slums of Beirut and the events leading him to serve a five-year sentence for a violent crime and suing his parents for neglect.
Speaking of the regional release, Mario Jr Haddad, President of Empire Entertainment, said: We are proud to be part of this great adventure along with Nadine and producer Khaled Mouzanar. Capernaum is more than a film. Its a cinematic journey that will leave audiences across the Middle East astonished. We are grateful to Nadine for portraying with accuracy and truth the childrens rights issue in Lebanon and we are proud to be the voice that will spread this message across the cinemas of the Middle East.
Winner of the Grand Jury price at the Cannes Film Festival, where the screening was followed by a 15-minute standing ovation, Capernaum made Labaki the first female Lebanese filmmaker to ever be nominated for the Academy Awards.
Internationally acclaimed by critics, the movie is an astonishing yet heartbreaking portrayal of the inner world of marginalised children who the system has failed, as Labaki herself has explained in several interviews.
The six-month filmmaking process, based on a three-year research over real life characters with the same struggles and background stories of the fictional ones, led Filmmaker Labaki to cast mostly unprofessional actors, ultimately resulting in an outstanding project praised by critics and catalysing worldwide interest of the press and media personalities.
Tweeting about the moving performances of leading non-actors Zain Al Rafeea and Boluwatife Treasure Bankole, Oprah Winfrey wrote These two are so compelling on screen and worthy of your time.
Capernaum has earned prestigious nominations including Academy Awards (Best Foreign Language Film), Golden Globes (Best Foreign-Language Film), BAFTA Awards (Best film not in the English language), Cesar Awards (Best Foreign Film) and the special recognition at the Critics Choice Awards.
